In the thirteenth year of the Republic,
I went back to my home in Fujian,
On my way I passed the White Horse Village in west Zhejiang.
During my few days there,
I wrote these travel notes.
——Monologue
小路旁 有一棵榕樹
xiaolu pang youyi ke rongshu
茂葉染綠曬網的蜘蛛
mao ye ran lu shai wang de zhizhu
By the narrow road, there is a banyan tree.
Lush leaves turn green the spider in the web.
農家客 荷鋤正起早
Nongjia ke he chu zheng qi zao
路過橋頭嘗幾塊豆腐
luguo qiaotou chang ji kuai doufu
Farmers rise early, carrying hoes on their shoulders.
Passed by the bridge and taste a couple slices of tofu.
小姑娘 捲簾又拉上
Xiao guniang juan lian you la shang
著急換上新裁的春裝
zhaoji huan shang xin cai de chunzhuang
Young ladies pull down blinds again.
And hurry to change into newly-tailored spring outfits.
三五位 攀談的棋客
Sanwu wei pantan de qi ke
樹下攤開昨日的陣仗
shuxia tan kai zuori de zhen zhang
A couple of schmoozing chess lovers.
Come under the tree to reopen yesterday’s game.
大白馬 鈴鐺陣陣響
Da baima lingdang zhen zhen xiang
孩童圍著討要馬奶喝
haitong weizhe tao yao ma nai he
The big white horse, its bells tinkling.
Children cluster, asking for horse milk.
去去去 老漢執鞭怒
Qu qu qu laohan zhi bian nu
你家大人下樓給錢啦
ni jia daren xia lou gei qian la
「Off! Off! Off!」 The annoyed old man with a whip in his hand.
「Let your parents to come down to pay」 he yells.
午後雨 泥地吭哧響
Wuhou yu ni di kengchi xiang
大大的榕樹好似一葉華蓋
dada de rongshu haosi yiye huagai
Heavy rain falls in the afternoon, rushing down the muddy ground.
The big banyan tree stands like a leaf-made cover.
白頭翁 檐下梳毛髮
Baitouweng yan xia shumao fa
渾身濕透 瑟瑟發抖
hunshen shi tou sese fadou
A Chinese bulbul, preening under the roof.
Soaked with water, it trembled in cold.
日將斜 飛鳥歸山林
Ri jiang xie feiniao gui shanlin
南風帶來鄰村的炊煙
nan feng dai lai lin cun de chuiyan
The sun is setting, birds back to mountain wood.
The south wind brings the smoke of cooking from nearby neighborhood.
夜深沈 江船一盞燈
Ye shenchen jiang chuan yi zhan deng
窗外蟲鳴 一宿好夢
chuangwai chong ming yi su hao meng
Deep into the night, a boat light flashes dimly on the river.
Bugs chirp outside the window. Sweet dream and sleep tight.

Little girl, the curtain is closed again
Anxious to change into the newly cut spring clothes
Young ladies pull down blinds again.
And hurry to change into newly-tailored spring outfits.
Three or five chatters
Yesterday’s battle spread out under the tree
A couple of schmoozing chess lovers.
Come under the tree to reopen yesterday’s game.
Big white horse, bells ringing
Children gathered around begging for mare’s milk
The big white horse, its bells tinkling.
Children cluster, asking for horse milk.
Go go go
Your adult came downstairs to give money
“Off! Off! Off!” The annoyed old man with a whip in his hand.

Afternoon rain, the mud squeaks
The big banyan tree is like a canopy

Drenched and trembling
A Chinese bulbul, preening under the roof.
Soaked with water, it trembled in cold.
Rijiang slanting, birds return to the forest
South wind brings smoke from neighboring villages
The sun is setting, birds back to mountain wood.
The south wind brings the smoke of cooking from nearby neighborhood.
Deep at night, a light on the river boat
Worms outside the window, a good dream
Deep into the night, a boat light flashes dimly on the river.
Bugs chirp outside the window. Sweet dream and sleep tight.
